Magento 2 – Remove index.php from the URL

Removing index.php from your Magento 2 website is easy. You don’t need to manually alter your .htaccess file, but to enable Web Server Rewrites within Magento.

Remove index.php

To change your site from;

mymagentowebsite.com/index.php

mymagentowebsite.com/index.php/category.html

to

mymagentowebsite.com/

mymagentowebsite.com/category.html

 

Login in to your Magento 2 admin area and find;

Stores > Configuration > Web > Search Engine Optimization > Use Web Server Rewrites

Then select Yes, as shown in the screengrab below.

Your site URLS will now look much cleaner and it should improve your SEO.
